It seems like the new thing for horror movies is to make it be a found footage film so it seems real and more authentic, every since Paranormal Activity there have been way more of these types of horror films even though The Blair Witch Project was the first to do PA capitalized on this genre and now every few months we get a found footage horror film that is a a bit brainless and is filmed with someone who is going through the most unspeakable things but has the time to still film what is happening to them. This is not the case with As Above So Below because it’s actually a really good horror film where it not only has lots of frights but it gets inside your head and freaks you out. The story is about Scarlett who is looking for an artifact and her search takes her to Paris where she is being filmed for a documentary about her exploits to find the sacred philosophers stone, she enlists the help of her friend George and they get a team of locals who have knowledge of the catacombs because they need to enter them to find the stone but there is more beneath the streets than they think. While it does take a little while for the scares to happen when they do they’re kind of a mind fuck. The thing that made this movie eery is the use of the background sounds much like what was done in The Quiet Ones, also the fact that whatever happened to the characters it was their own personal hell and it made the movie more intense probably because there was time spent on giving all the characters their own backstory instead of just throwing them all together and killing them off one by one. Even thought Scarlett is a bit dumb for not thinking about the people she was putting in harms way later on in the film you do feel for her when you find out her tragedy and how she overcomes that hurdle. The long set up for the scares was really great because it gave the story more time to become something and not just a typical horror film, and lately there haven’t been that many that have been scary but this one sure did know what buttons to push to get me to jump in my seat. This was a good way to end the summer and with all the upcoming found footage horror films coming up we will see if they can be better than this film because it was one really great horror film.
